The Selangor government is planning to establish a Green Council in the near future, potentially by next year, which will focus on the state’s green policies and initiatives, according to Jamaliah Jamaluddin, the Selangor public health and environment committee chairman. Jamaluddin stated that the Green Council will be a dedicated group responsible for accelerating, addressing, and improving the state’s green policies and programs, including those related to the environment, green technology, and renewable energy. She believes that such a council is necessary to ensure the success of the First Selangor Plan, which emphasizes sustainable development.
Jamaluddin, who serves as the Bandar Utama assemblyman, mentioned that the Green Council will be established during her current term as exco, with a target goal of forming it by next year. She added that an exact timeline cannot be provided at the moment since the budget has not been set, and the council members have not been identified yet. She stressed the importance of having members from various related organizations, including government agencies, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations, as well as professionals and experts with experience in these matters.
Jamaluddin emphasized that the establishment of the Green Council should not be rushed, as the appointed members need to fully understand their roles and responsibilities for Selangor. She made these remarks during her speech at the state-level National Environment Day 2023 event held at Setia City Convention Centre, Shah Alam, where she was representing Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
The event, organized by the Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) in collaboration with the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit (Upen), aimed to commemorate National Environment Day, which is observed on October 21. The event was attended by various officials, including Selangor DOE director Nor Aziah Jaafar, state secretary Datuk Haris Kasim, Selangor state deputy secretary (development) Datuk Johary Anuar, and Petaling District officer Rahilah Rahmat.
During the event, Jamaluddin presented certificates of appreciation to representatives of petrol stations participating in a pilot e-waste collection program in Bandar Utama. She also unveiled a coffee table book titled “Khazanah Alam: Kelestarian Dan Kerentanan Tanah Gambut Negeri Selangor” (Natural Treasure: Sustainability And Vulnerability of Selangor’s Peat Soil).
