In a new concession period agreement with the government, Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) will now have the freedom to set ticket prices for trains to KL International Airport, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
Loke stated that this arrangement benefits both ERL and its users, allowing ERL to provide the best service without the burden of operation costs.
He also mentioned that this will reduce the financial obligation of the government, and expressed confidence that ERL will set prices that are acceptable to the market.
Regarding ticket prices, Loke assured that ERL does not currently have plans to increase them.
The announcement was made during the signing ceremony for the extension of the concession period agreement between the government and ERL on Tuesday (Jan 23).
Under the new agreement, the concession period will run from 2029 to 2059, ending the government’s regulation of ERL train fares.
Loke emphasized the government’s commitment to improving alternative services to KLIA, creating healthy competition in terms of fare options.
As part of the new agreement, the government will no longer pay ERL fees from the revenue of the Passenger Service Charge (PSC) starting from 2029.
Currently, ERL receives RM1 for every domestic passenger and RM5 for every international passenger from the PSC collections.
