The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) in Lahad Datu plans to use a coordinated application with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to ensure the safety of tourists in the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone). Esscom commander DCP Victor Sanjos stated that the application will make it easier for Esscom to track the movement of tourists and provide protection when necessary. This approach has been implemented successfully in other developed countries to ensure the safety of tourists entering their countries. To register and monitor tourists’ movements, they will be required to scan the security application on their mobile phones upon entry into the Esszone.
DCP Victor emphasized that tourists are valuable assets to the Esszone, as their influx greatly benefits the local economy. By monitoring their movements, Esscom can guarantee their safety and deploy assets when needed. During the Esscom shooting competition with Esszone media practitioners, DCP Victor revealed that a total of 54,795 tourists visited the Esszone area in the first seven months of this year, exceeding last year’s figure of 31,619. This increase demonstrates the growing confidence tourists have in the security measures implemented in the Esszone.
DCP Victor also supported the use of high-tech security assets such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to further enhance security in the Esszone. Utilizing these advanced technologies enables faster and more efficient information dissemination and precise instructions to the ground assets, minimizing response time during critical situations. The Chief Minister’s recent recommendation to incorporate UAVs into the security system is viewed as crucial for ensuring a higher level of security in the Esszone.
In response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of a RM40 million allocation for infrastructure upgrades, including living quarters for Esscom personnel, DCP Victor mentioned that a survey has been conducted to purchase suitable housing facilities in Lahad Datu. This initiative aims to provide civil servants and Esscom security staff with comfortable accommodation and peace of mind, allowing them to focus on their duties without housing or posting concerns. DCP Victor expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for prioritizing Esscom’s needs. – Bernama
