KOTA KINABALU: An impressive seizure of RM4.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes of various brands was carried out by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) during a recent raid in Lahad Datu on Thursday (March 14).
Deputy Commissioner Datuk Victor Sanjos, the commander of Esscom, released a statement on Friday (March 15) detailing the successful operation at an unnumbered building on Jalan Tamoi Baru in Lahad Datu. The raid was initiated based on a tip-off from the public regarding suspected smuggling activities.
Victor congratulated Esscom’s special task team for the seizure of 3,178,120 cigarette sticks and 400 small packets of tobacco, totaling an estimated after-tax value of RM4,137,474. The confiscated cigarettes included brands such as Astro Merah, Astro Hijau, Samson Mild, Samson Menthol, Era Premium, Era Black, and Tembakau Salak, which were found hidden in various containers like boxes and plastic wrappings.
In his statement, Victor emphasized Esscom’s commitment to continue monitoring and conducting special operations to combat activities that may pose a threat to public safety, particularly along Sabah’s east coast.
He also urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the Esscom operation center by calling 089-863 181 or through WhatsApp at 011-6331 1072, to aid in the prevention of illicit activities.
