KOTA KINABALU: A nurse based in this area has demonstrated her commitment to saving lives and caring for the sick even after her passing.
Sulimah Gilong (pic), 59, served with the Health Ministry for 34 years, starting in 1989. In 2015, she registered herself as an organ donor.
After being declared brain dead earlier this year, Sulimah fulfilled her final act of service.
Following written consent from her next of kin, Queen Elizabeth Hospital II executed Sulimah’s wish to be an organ donor.
Sabah health director Dr Asits Sanna stated that Sulimah had pledged to donate various tissues and organs, including her kidneys, liver, and corneas.
“Through her donation, Sulimah saved the lives of three patients suffering from kidney and liver failure, and provided the gift of sight to two others.
“During her life, she was a nurse who served devotedly, and even after her passing, she continued to contribute,” Dr Asits remarked in a statement.
The Sabah Health Department expressed its profound gratitude to Sulimah’s family for fulfilling her wishes and bestowing the gift of life, he added.
Dr Asits remarked that this marked the first instance of multiple organ and tissue donation, and the fifth overall organ donation, in Sabah this year.
He further noted that Sulimah had most recently worked at the Medical Ward 4 and Respiratory Ward of the hospital.
“She was a diligent nurse who diligently carried out her duties, well-liked by her colleagues, and attentive to her patients’ needs,” he stated.
Dr Asits also urged the public to view Sulimah’s final act as an inspiration and a positive example.
