A former clerical assistant of the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) has been accused of cheating and charged at the Sessions Court in Melaka. Muhammad Anuar Md Zin, 38, pleaded not guilty to four counts of cheating, involving approximately RM154,000. The charges were read to him before judge Elesabet Paya Wan on August 30.
The accused is alleged to have deceived four part-time teachers by presenting them with fake receipts for the reimbursement of allowances due to their resignations between December 1, 2016, and November 30, 2018. The total payout amounted to RM154,864.40. The accused is said to have committed the offense between November 8, 2017, and July 19, 2018, at JAIM’s human resources section in Melaka Tengah district.
The charges are framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which deals with cheating. If convicted, the accused may face imprisonment for a term of one to ten years and whipping. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Nur Syakila Yaacob appeared for the prosecution, while Mohd Nazri Abd Hamid represented the accused.
The court granted bail in the amount of RM10,000 and instructed the accused to report to the MACC office monthly until the case is resolved. The next mention of the case is scheduled for September 15.
