In a recent development, a former special officer to a minister has been arrested by graft busters for allegedly soliciting a RM25,000 bribe in exchange for an approval letter for a citizenship application. The man, who is in his 40s, was detained at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters on Tuesday (July 11) at around 5pm.
According to sources, the suspect served as a special officer to a minister in 2019. The incident came to light when he approached a local man who had applied for his child’s citizenship since 2015. In June, the suspect contacted the individual and informed him that he possessed the approval letter. However, he demanded a bribe of RM25,000 before handing over the letter.
The suspect’s arrest came as a response to the Prime Minister’s call for the MACC to investigate corrupt practices within the National Registration Department. Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin has granted a three-day remand order until Friday (July 14) after the MACC applied for it at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (July 12).
Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman, the director of MACC Intelligence Division, confirmed that the suspect has been detained under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 to assist with ongoing investigations.
