The former lead singer of the popular rock band Exists, known as Mamat, has entered a not guilty plea to two charges related to drug possession and consumption. The 46-year-old, whose real name is Mohd Ali Kamarudin, made his plea after the charges were read to him at the Magistrate’s Court in Johor Baru on Tuesday (Jan 23).
During the proceedings, it was alleged that Mamat consumed methamphetamine at 2am on Sept 9, 2019. The charge was made under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, with a potential jail term of between five and seven years and the possibility of receiving up to three strokes of the whip if convicted.
In a separate case at the Sessions Court, Mamat was accused of possessing 0.17g methamphetamine during a police raid on Jalan Camar 1/3 of Taman Perling at 11.35pm on Sept 8, 2019. The charge under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries a possible jail term of up to five years, a maximum fine of RM100,000, or both if found guilty.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Bari’ah Jalil and Nur Aqiilah Ahmad Rofaei, while Mamat was represented by Azlina Abdul Aziz. During the proceedings, Azlina requested for her client to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at the Permai Hospital in line with Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
After considering the request, Judge Fatimah granted it and set Feb 22 for mention pending the medical report.
