Malaysians are being encouraged to start wearing masks again, as Covid-19 cases nearly doubled in the last week.

Although masks are no longer mandatory, medical experts are advising people to take precautionary measures similar to those enforced during the height of the pandemic.

Wearing masks, particularly in crowded areas, public transportation, and unfamiliar places, is essential to prevent the virus from affecting the elderly, who are the most vulnerable.

The Health director-general, Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, reported that the number of Covid-19 cases increased from 6,796 to 12,757 in the span of two weeks. There were also 11 deaths between Dec 3 and Dec 9.

Dr Muhammad Radzi stated that despite the rise in new cases, the overall situation is still manageable and not overwhelming for healthcare facilities. Most cases have mild symptoms and do not require hospitalization.

However, the significant increase has raised concerns among experts.

President of the Association of Specialists in Private Medical Practice Malaysia, Datuk Dr Balwant Singh Gendeh, emphasized that the elderly and individuals with hypertension, asthma, and cancer are at higher risk.

He believes wearing masks will help protect others and prevent a surge in Covid-19 cases.

Newly-appointed Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, has been urged to take three measures to control the Covid-19 resurgence.

MCA deputy president, Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, suggested that the ministry issue the latest pandemic preventive guidelines for business operators, particularly in retail and catering, where large crowds gather for extended periods.

He also recommended the promotion of online shopping and take-out services, as well as the re-implementation of stringent pandemic-era SOP for public transport users. Additionally, there should be guidance on whether people should receive further booster shots against Covid-19.

Prof Dr Moy Foong Ming of Universiti Malaya’s Department of Social and Preventive Medicine highlighted the importance of wearing masks as a public health measure.

According to the KKMNow website, there are currently 20,017 active cases, with 446 hospitalizations. There are eight unventilated cases and 13 ventilated cases in the intensive care unit as of Dec 11.
