In Sarawak, the Sibujaya Bike Week is showcasing extreme motorsports and has the potential to become a global sports tourism product, according to Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai. He believes that the Sibujaya Extreme Motocross Grand Prix, the highlight of the Sibujaya Bike Week, could attract motocross fans from outside Sarawak and even overseas. Ngelai is confident that this event can bring sports tourism to Sarawak and promote Sibujaya as well.
The Sibujaya Grand Prix, taking place from Aug 26 to Sept 3, has drawn participants from outside Sarawak. In addition to the grand prix, other exciting events like the Bike Show, Mountain bike, and Entertainment Stage are also part of the Sibujaya Bike Week 2023.
Ngelai has highlighted the rapid growth of Sibujaya over the past five years, with its current population reaching 40,000. He attributes this growth to Sibujaya’s strategic location in the middle of the Pan Borneo Highway, which has contributed to its economic development and population settlement.
Ngelai acknowledged the planning and efforts of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who was the housing minister at the time, for the successful development of Sibujaya. He commends the Sarawak government, the developer, and the local authority for their contribution to making Sibujaya a well-organized place with commercial buildings and housing for residents.
