    Factory worker charged with having materials linked to Islamic State

    KOTA TINGGI: A factory worker has been charged at the Sessions Court here with two counts of possessing materials linked to the Islamic State (IS) group.

    Suhaini Sarwan, 46, nodded when the charges were read to her before Sessions judge Hayda Faridzal Abu Hassan on Thursday (June 27).

    However, no plea was recorded from the accused.

    According to the charge sheet, Suhaini was found in possession of articles related to IS and terrorism-related activities on her laptop.

    She was also accused of possessing items, including five books, related to IS.

    Suhaini allegedly committed the offences at about 2.20pm on May 30 at Jalan Baiduri, Taman Daiman Jaya and Felda Lok Heng Barat, both in Kota Tinggi.

    The charges were framed under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code for the possession of materials in support of terrorist activities.

    The charge is punishable under Section 130JB(1) of the same Act, which provides a jail sentence of up to seven years or fines and the seizure of properties used or intended to be used to commit the offence, upon conviction.

    The case was prosecuted by DPP Mohammad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim while the accused was not represented.

    No bail was offered as per Section 13 of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

    The Judge then set July 29 for the decision on an appeal for the case to be transferred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

    On Tuesday (June 25), Suhaini, her husband and another individual were charged at the Johor Baru Sessions Court with five counts of supporting and possessing items related to IS.
