PETALING JAYA: According to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the government may take action against telecommunications service providers (telcos) who charge extra fees to customers for accessing the 5G network. Fahmi stated that the infrastructure costs for the network’s development before the Share Subscription Agreement (SSA) were funded by the public (Bernama).
On Dec 1, the SSA signing allocated 70% equity in Digital Nasional Berhad to five telcos, with each injecting RM233mil of funding towards the development of the new network.
Fahmi made it clear, “Therefore, there should not be any additional fees. If they continue to impose such charges, we will have to consider taking action,” during the launch of satellite television service OK Vision. He also mentioned that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is aware that telcos should not put such additional charges in place.
Furthermore, Fahmi revealed that after recent discussions with the telco’s chief executive officer, CelcomDigi has revised its packages to eliminate the additional fees. “In its new packages, it has eliminated the additional fees. This is what CelcomDigi conveyed to me,” he said.
