After her father, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, had his prison sentence reduced rather than being given a full pardon, his daughter Nooryana Najwa Najib posted a picture of herself leaning on his shoulder, with the caption “False hope… is worse than despair” on her personal Instagram account @yananajib.
This update followed her previous post expressing disappointment that her father did not receive a full pardon.
In response to the Pardons Board’s decision to reduce the jail term from 12 years to six, she stated, “While we appreciate the sentence reduction, we are disappointed that Najib did not receive full pardon and was released immediately.”
The Pardons Board announced on Friday that Najib’s jail term had been reduced from 12 years to six, with a release date of Aug 23, 2028.
Additionally, the fine imposed on him was reduced to RM50mil from RM210mil.
However, if the fine is not paid, a year will be added to the jail term, extending the release date to Aug 23, 2029, according to the Pardons Board secretariat.
Najib is currently serving a 12-year sentence after being found guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering related to RM42mil from SRC International, a former 1MDB subsidiary, for which he was also fined RM210mil.
He is also facing trial for charges of abuse of power that allegedly brought him financial benefit amounting to RM2.28bil, believed to have been 1MDB funds.
