Approximately 100 family members of 69 detainees held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) have carried out a hunger strike outside the Sungai Buloh Prison in a bid to secure the release of the inmates.
The Sungai Buloh Prison reportedly houses 34 of the Sosma detainees, with the remaining incarcerated in Alor Setar Prison.
Nambikkai Malaysia National, a non-governmental organization, staged the protest to demand the government release all detainees and repeal the preventive law.
Datuk Kalai Vanar, President of Nambikkai Malaysia National, stated that the 34 Sosma inmates in Sungai Buloh initiated the hunger strike on Sunday (July 30).
Also present at the protest was Ganesan M. Krishnan, former President of the Detainees Welfare Organisation (Popoc), who revealed that the 69 detainees, suspected of engaging in criminal activities, have been in custody for periods ranging from one to three years.
