Company promotes recycling agenda with competition
TEN fashion designers recently participated in the “Waste is Amazing 2023” fashion competition organized by Alam Flora Sdn Bhd to raise awareness about waste management and sustainability, coinciding with the company’s 10th anniversary.
The event took place at Galeri Seni Tuanku Nur Zahirah (Gesturz), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam and featured a glamorous Hollywood-themed fashion design.
The designers used unconventional materials, including used clothing, newspapers, plastic bags, bottle caps, and aluminum can tabs, to create their unique fashion pieces.
Alam Flora’s CEO, Datuk Mohd Zain Hassan, expressed the company’s commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, emphasizing a vision that extends beyond the mere collection of recyclables.
The company aims to increase Malaysia’s recycling rate from 33.1% to 40% by 2025 and is partnering with UiTM to educate young people about the significance of recycling for a sustainable future.
The “Waste is Amazing” competition, held annually for the past decade, reflects Alam Flora’s dedication to engaging with Malaysians and fostering a recycling culture.
Approximately 50 people attended the competition, with winners chosen by a three-member jury consisting of representatives from Alam Flora, a Worldstar Goodwill Ambassador Champion, and a senior fashion lecturer from UiTM.
Mohamad Hilmi Idris emerged as the winner, earning RM3,000 in cash, a trophy, crown, sash, and a participation certificate for his design “The Reflection of Harry Styles.”
Second and third place winners, Attiya Balqist Asha’ari and Siti Nabilah Mohd Roslide, received RM2,000 and RM1,000 in cash, respectively.
Md Zain emphasized the initiative’s support for sustainable practices and its potential to positively impact the fashion industry’s environmental footprint, also highlighting Alam Flora’s readiness to guide Malaysians towards a more environmentally conscious future.
