KUCHING: Senator Abun Sui Anyit has called for collaboration between the Federal and Sarawak governments to develop native customary rights (NCR) land for the benefit of the people. He emphasized that land is a state matter, and it is the responsibility of the state government to issue land titles to native landowners under Section 18 of the state Land Code. In a statement on Tuesday (Sept 12), he said this would allow the natives to be involved in land development efforts by the Federal Government. He also stressed the importance of issuing land titles to prevent obstacles and deprivation of development opportunities that require land titles, such as carbon trading. Abun expressed the need for the Sarawak government’s political will to empower the people economically.
The 12th Malaysia Plan’s mid-term review (12MP MTR), released on Monday (Sept 11), stated that the Federal Government will strengthen the development of NCR land through an integrated approach involving federal agencies, state governments, and the private sector. Survey and mapping exercises of NCR land will also be expedited to facilitate state governments in gazetting and granting land titles. These initiatives aim to promote NCR land development and create income-generating opportunities for Anak Negeri Sabah and Bumiputera Sarawak. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing the development of Sabah and Sarawak through projects and initiatives in the 12MP. He highlighted the ongoing implementation of 64 projects to rebuild dilapidated school buildings in Sarawak.
In response, Abun expressed Sarawak PKR’s willingness to support the unity government in monitoring the implementation of federal projects in the state. He emphasized the importance of good and transparent management in these projects.
