Malaysia’s premier agribusiness and food company, FGV Holdings Berhad, is actively engaging with oil palm smallholders to implement sustainable development policies in the palm oil industry. Through consultation programs, FGV is committed to the success of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) and Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certifications. These programs, which started in January 2020, align with the government’s mandate for all palm oil entrepreneurs to obtain MSPO certification, including independent smallholders and fruit bunch suppliers.
In addition to certification goals, the consultation programs act as a platform for information sharing and knowledge exchange. FGV aims to provide suppliers and smallholders with the opportunity to provide feedback valuable for improving FGV’s operations. The sessions cover various topics such as FGV’s sustainability commitment, the importance of palm oil certification, the 3Ps principle (people-planet-profit), and fostering sustainable business relationships with stakeholders.
FGV’s consultation program includes nine sessions across Malaysia. Six series were dedicated to farmers and suppliers in Peninsular Malaysia, two sessions in Sarawak, and one in Sabah. The first series took place in Johor Baru, followed by Kuching, Port Dickson, Penang, Kuantan, and Kuala Terengganu. Recently, FGV held the seventh series in Miri and anticipates the next location to be in Rompin. The final session for the year will be held in Tawau, Sabah.
To ensure the success of these consultations, FGV has committed RM4.05 million since 2020 and aims to attract approximately 1,000 participants for the entire program. Positive feedback has been received from various stakeholders.
During the closing ceremony of the Miri session, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof commended the participants for their support of the sustainable palm oil industry. He expressed gratitude to FGV for organizing the critical program for private smallholders and the local palm oil industry. The event was attended by FGV’s CEO, Datuk Nazrul Mansor, along with the board of directors and senior management team. A total of 150 smallholders and suppliers took part in the closing ceremony in Miri.
Alongside the consultations, FGV actively implements environmental conservation programs. The Sun Bear Conservation Program, in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Malaysia Nature Society (MNS), aims to preserve animals such as sun bears, gibbons, and pangolins for future generations.
FGV remains committed to sustainability efforts in the palm oil industry, guided by its sustainability framework focusing on three core values: respecting human rights, protecting the environment, and promoting economic growth.
