    Fire breaks out at Pulau Burung landfill

    NIBONG TEBAL: A fire broke out at Pulau Burung landfill on Sunday (July 21).

    In the noon incident, the fire spread to an area at the state landfill measuring about 0.8ha.

    Nibong Tebal Fire Station chief Noor Asfariza Mohamad Kadir said the department received a call about the fire at 12.08pm.

    “A team of firefighters were deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire,” she said.

    She said after more than five hours, the fire was brought under control at 5.23pm.

    In January 2022, about 16ha of Pulau Burung landfill was on fire for about 20 days.

    The landfill was declared a Level One disaster area based on the National Security Council’s directive No. 20 after the fire polluted the air surrounding the area, posing a risk to health.

    The incident also forced ten schools located within a 10km radius of the Pulau Burung landfill on the mainland of Penang were ordered to close.

    Some 400 residents from 86 families living near the Pulau Burung landfill had to be evacuated.
