Residents in Sibu are being warned to stay vigilant while participating in recreational activities near riverbanks in order to avoid potential water surges.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department issued this caution as the northeast monsoon season continues.
The fire chief in the Sibu zone, Andy Alie, outlined the early signs of a water surge as a sudden increase in water levels and alterations in the water’s color.
He also emphasized the importance of recognizing stronger currents and the presence of floating debris.
Andy recommended taking immediate safety precautions if these signs are observed, such as moving to a safer area and contacting the fire department.
He stated, “I advise the public to be cautious during recreational activities, particularly during this northeast monsoon season.”
“It’s important for the public to stay informed about the weather conditions and ensure that their campsites are at a safe distance from the riverside,” he told Bernama.
Over the weekend, nine families from Bintulu, who were camping along Sungai Yong in Kapit, were affected by a water surge caused by heavy rainfall.
