Eight double storey shophouses along Datuk Keramat Road in George Town are currently on fire as the fire and rescue department works to control the damage and prevent the fire from spreading further.
In a statement, the fire department stated that the fire has already caused 90% damage to the heritage shop houses.
“We were informed about the fire at 8.04pm on Thursday (Sept 7).
Upon arriving at the scene, we found that eight two storey shophouses were engulfed in flames,” the statement said on Thursday.
The fire department is being supported in their efforts to extinguish the fire by nearby fire stations and volunteer fire units.
No individuals have been reported as victims of the fire.
Based on various videos circulating on social media, it appears that the fire has destroyed an eatery and a motorcycle repair shop, among others.
