A first-time voter named Lizfiana Samerra Tony experienced a combination of nerves and excitement as she cast her vote in the Pulai parliamentary seat by-election. The 19-year-old college student, who hails from Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Temun, believed that her vote would have an impact on electing a new Member of Parliament who would not neglect her community. She likened the voting experience to an examination but acknowledged that there were no right or wrong answers, only choices that would affect the entire constituency. Lizfiana had the opportunity to discuss politics with her parents before making her decision as she was home from college for a two-month break.
Lizfiana’s mother, Liza Jaafar, 41, provided her with transportation to the SK Sungai Danga polling center to cast her vote. Lizfiana’s father, who serves as the village’s chief fisherman, went to the polling station on his own as he was occupied with arranging transportation for other villagers. He arranged for three cars to transport the residents to and from the voting center, a practice he faithfully carries out during every election to ensure the voice of their community is heard. Liza, who is a mother of six, emphasized that when it comes to the ballot box, her daughter is free to make her own choice.
