The Melaka Fisheries Department has identified 263 unique species of marine life in the waters of the Melaka Marine Park involving three islands namely Pulau Undan, Pulau Nangka and Pulau Dodol.

Deputy director Nawar Abd Karim stated that a study conducted in the area revealed the presence of coral reefs of the Acropora variety, which are usually found in the East Coast waters.

This finding indicates that the Melaka Marine Park waters are still clear, unpolluted, and unexplored, despite the presence of coral reefs.

Nawar further stated that the area surrounding these islands is comparable to the 42 islands found in Malaysia, as it holds untapped treasures in the sea. Additionally, the coral reefs found in Melaka Marine Park are larger in size, multi-colored, and in pristine condition.

Last Saturday (Oct 21), Nawar attended a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and promotion of the Melaka Marine Park, along with media practitioners. Azhar Yaacob, the Melaka Islands Development Council (MPPM) CEO, was also present at the event.

Nawar added that approximately 1,200 people have visited the Melaka Marine Park since its designation as the first national marine park in the state in April. As a precautionary measure to preserve the marine resources in the area, the council is now determining the appropriate number of visitors allowed and has limited the number to 200 per month.

He also emphasized the need for visitors to use registered boat operators to control the number of water activities and preserve the marine life in the area. Visitors are allowed to engage in activities such as swimming along the beach, scuba diving, snorkeling, and island tours from 8am to 6pm.

In addition to scuba diving and snorkeling, visitors can visit the lighthouse at the summit of Pulau Undan, a historical monument built in 1880 and supervised by the Malaysian Marine Department. However, visits to the lighthouse are arranged and not open to the public at all times.

Azhar also mentioned that the MPPM will continue its efforts to promote the Melaka Marine Park, especially leading up to Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM2024), to attract more visitors who can witness the beauty and uniqueness of these islands.
