An explosion on the deck of a fishing boat near Pulau Tinggi in Mersing resulted in the death of one person and left two others injured. The incident occurred between 7am and 8am on Thursday (Aug 17), approximately four nautical miles (about 7km) west of the island, according to Suhaizan Saadin, the Maritime Commander of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Mersing zone.
The boat had four men on board, including the skipper, when the explosion happened. The skipper, a 57-year-old man, suspected that the loud noise came from an air-conditioner onboard, which was followed by a fire,” stated Suhaizan Saadin in a press release. Sadly, one of the crew members, identified as 43-year-old Muhmad Arodi Sulaiman, lost his life in the incident. The skipper, on the other hand, escaped unhurt while two other crew members, aged 43 and 59, sustained injuries.
Suhaizan Saadin further added, “The surviving victims received medical attention once they were brought to the Mersing marine police jetty. The police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.”
In case of any maritime emergencies or complaints, individuals are advised to contact the Johor maritime operations centre hotline at 07-2199 404 or MERS 999 for immediate assistance.
