KANGAR: Five men pleaded not guilty in a Magistrate’s Court here on Friday (Oct 4) to charges of attempting to murder a policeman.
Mohd Firdaus Abdul Hadi, 34; Muhammad Alif Saiful Ahmad Zaini, 31; Muhammad Badrul Amin Ahmad, 26; Muhammad Yasin Zairi, 20; and Abdul Tawwab Abd Ghalib, 36; made their pleas after the charges were read separately before Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim.
Mohd Firdaus, Muhammad Alif Saiful, Muhammad Badrul Amin, Muhammad Yasin, and an accomplice still at large were charged with attempting to murder policemen by using an SUV to ram into a police patrol car.
Abdul Tawwab faced a similar charge for allegedly driving a car at high speed and in a dangerous manner into a police team.
The offences were allegedly committed at Permai 2, Jalan Satu, Taman Jejawi in Arau, between 4am and 4.20am on Sept 27.
The charges fall under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which stipulates imprisonment of up to 10 years and potentially up to 20 years if the act causes harm, upon conviction.
None of the accused were granted bail.
Additionally, the same court charged the five men and an accomplice still at large with committing mischief by cutting Telekom Malaysia cables at the same location, date, and time.
They pleaded not guilty to this charge, which is framed under Section 431A of the Penal Code in conjunction with Section 34, carrying penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
For this charge, bail was set at RM3,500 with one surety each, and the court scheduled Oct 24 for mention.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Tengku Ruqayyah Tengku Shahrom represented the prosecution.
Mohd Firdaus, Muhammad Alif Saiful, Muhammad Badrul Amin, and Muhammad Yasin were represented by lawyer Datuk Ganesan Subramaniam, while Abdul Tawwab was represented by lawyer Muhamad Amirul Mansor from the National Legal Aid Foundation. – Bernama
