KOTA KINABALU: In response to a red notice warning issued by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, health officers have temporarily closed five eateries at resorts and islands in Semporna. The special operation, which began on Saturday (Aug 19), also resulted in 18 notices being issued for various breaches of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009. Dr Sahrol Nizam Abu Bakar, the health officer in Semporna, stated that this exercise will be conducted at other tourist destinations and islands to inspect their kitchens. On Monday (Aug 21), an engagement session took place between local authorities, government agencies, and tourism players in Semporna.

Dr Sahrol previously mentioned that his office had only received two complaints relating to food poisoning in the district, both of which were submitted through the Public Complaints Management System (Sispaa). The complaints involved two domestic tourists who experienced diarrhea after leaving Semporna in May. Following investigations, these cases were found to be isolated, and no complaints have been received about food poisoning among foreign tourists.

In light of a food poisoning complaint by a tourist at a resort, Tiong had issued a warning that a red notice might be imposed on travel to Semporna. Alongside food poisoning incidents, tourists had also filed complaints about poor hygiene, inadequate cleanliness, litter, pest infestation, and unsatisfactory hospitality services. In response, Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew assured that appropriate measures had been taken and emphasized the seriousness with which the warning was regarded.

Dr Sahrol further stated that, as of August 16, a total of 66 notices had been issued for various offenses under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 in Semporna. Additionally, 397 premises had been inspected, comprising 255 first-time checks and 143 inspections of outlets with repeated violations. Dr Sahrol specified that notices were sent to five kitchens at resorts, 135 to stalls or hawkers, 15 to school canteens and hostel kitchens, one to a food processing factory, and one to a bread shop.
