Five enforcement agency officers in Kedah have been detained and remanded for six days on allegations of soliciting and accepting bribes from fishing vessel owners. The remand order was granted by Magistrate Siti Norhidayah Mohd Noor at the Alor Setar Court Complex and will commence on Tuesday, September 12. The suspects are accused of accepting bribes from 2018 to 2021 as an incentive to not take any action against fishing vessels violating the Fisheries Act 1985. The enforcement officers, aged between 30 and 50, were among a group of nine officers and two civilians detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)
The two civilians allegedly offered bribes ranging from RM300 to RM7,000 to the nine enforcement officers, who were stationed in Kuala Kedah, Langkawi, and Batu Uban in Penang. The remaining six suspects were released on MACC bonds after their statements were recorded. The case is currently being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
