KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Development Minister Nga Kor Ming says that the proposed Fixed Term Parliament Act (FTPA) will play a crucial role in restoring the confidence and good will of the public. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (Jan 16), Nga emphasized that the proposed Act would also ensure the stability of the country moving forward.
Nga stated, “Once implemented, everyone will be able to focus their efforts entirely on nation building and economic prosperity instead of being continuously involved in the endless politicking that we faced recently.” He emphasized that the proposed Act would make future elections easier to plan for everyone involved.
According to Nga, “The Election Commission will be able to focus their efforts on planning any future election and no longer have to waste time to determine the optimal time to hold the election.” He added that it would also make it easier for the public and businesses to automatically determine when the next election will take place without needing to wait for an announcement from the EC.
FTPA was first suggested by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Jan 13 in order to prevent mid-term changes of government. This was in response to recent claims by some Opposition leaders that a plan to topple the unity government was underway.
According to an article on The Star Online, the proposed FTPA is an initiative to reduce political instability that has been prevalent in the country. However, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stated that no decision has been made on the proposed Act yet. The proposed Act aims to prevent mid-term changes of government and create stability in the country.
