KOTA KINABALU: Flash floods have struck several low-lying areas in Sabah’s west coast following a five-hour downpour on Wednesday (July 12). While emergency services did not receive any reports of serious incidents or requests for evacuation, two houses in the Telipok refugee settlement scheme were affected by a minor landslip, fortunately causing no injuries, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.
To ensure the safety of the area, firemen are currently monitoring the affected area.
Many roads in Likas, Manggatal, Kolombong, Inanam, Sepanggar, as well as parts of neighboring Tuaran and Papar districts, have been flooded, restricting access to heavy vehicles only, as per reports. SK Rampayan in Manggatal and Queen Elizabeth Hospital I are among the locations that have been inundated with water.
The ongoing floods have significantly slowed down traffic in many parts of the state capital.
Internet users have been sharing videos and photos of the flood-damaged areas across various locations.
Authorities, including the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, police, and Rela, have been mobilized and are currently on standby to respond to any emergency.
Meteorologists have predicted thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain for three days in western Sabah and northern Sarawak, starting from Wednesday.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) attributed the inclement weather to a developing low pressure system in the west of the Philippines, moving towards southern China in a northwest direction.
MetMalaysia has issued a warning about strong winds and rough seas in the waters of the South China Sea from July 15 to 18.
