Flight ticket subsidy for public varsity students expanded, begins Oct 6

PETALING JAYA: The air ticket subsidy initiative for public university students on domestic flights begins on Friday (Oct 6).

The incentive has also been expanded to cover students of polytechnics and community colleges under the Higher Education Ministry, as well as matriculation and teacher training colleges under the Education Ministry, Sinar Harian reported.

According to the daily, the Transport Ministry said in a statement on Friday that students can check their eligibility status on https://subsidiudara.mpt.gov.my/.

“After checking, those eligible can apply for the subsidy to buy the tickets from any of the airlines such as MASwings and Firefly, AirAsia, Batik Air and MYAirline, selected by the ministry,” it said.

After processing the application, the airline concerned will issue a digital voucher for RM300 to the student as shell credit to buy the ticket.

“If the price of the ticket is less than RM300, the balance (of the credit) can be used for future ticket purchases,” the statement added.

According to the ministry, the last date to redeem the voucher is Dec 31 next year, although tickets purchased by then may be used for flights after that date.

It said those who found they were not eligible can appeal to their relevant institutions.

“For now, the ones eligible are only those registered in (qualified institutions) until the academic session of 2022/2023 and who have not completed their studies after this session,” it added.

This incentive was announced by the government in July.
