KOTA KINABALU: In response to the rising water level as a result of heavy rainfall on Wednesday (July 12), a temporary relocation centre has been activated in Penampang district.
Francis Chong, the district officer of Penampang who chairs the district disaster management committee, has announced the opening of the Penampang Sports Complex shelter at 8.50pm.
In a statement, Chong said, “After receiving information that the Moyog River water level has reached 9m and with the advice of Penampang deputy OCPD DSP Sammy Newton, I declare the Penampang temporary relocation centre open.”
Other than Penampang, nearby districts including Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, and Papar on Sabah’s west coast are also experiencing flooding in low-lying areas due to heavy rain.
These districts have been dealing with intermittent wet spells over the past few days, but the situation worsened on Wednesday, leading to flash floods in certain locations.
