Bukit Mertajam experienced flash floods on Thursday (Sept 21) night, leading to the evacuation of 52 people from 12 families in Kampung Kota. The victims were relocated to Dewan MPKK Kampung Kota as flood waters rose in their villages, according to Central Seberang Prai Civil Defence Force officer Captain (PA) Mohd Fadhil Fahmi Zaini. The temporary relief centre was activated by 11pm after the villagers contacted the authorities about the flash flood. Mohd Fadhil stated that a team was dispatched to assist in the evacuation process.

In addition to the relocation, the Civil Defence Force personnel at the centre are collaborating with the state Welfare Department to address logistics and safety concerns. Despite the heavy downpour starting at 10pm, the water levels in Sungai Junjong and Sungai Prai remained below the dangerous threshold. Monitoring of the flood situation continues by relevant agencies.

Flash floods also affected SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad Said, but classes were able to continue relatively uninterrupted. One teacher, who preferred to remain anonymous, reported that around 10 classrooms were flooded. However, students were quickly relocated to unaffected rooms. To aid in the restoration effort, approximately 20 members from the Adventure Touring Motorsport Group volunteered their time from 8am to 4pm to clean the school compound. The school’s canteen and a workshop also suffered damage as a result of the floods.
