KUALA TERENGGANU: The residents of Terengganu are being reminded to get ready for a potential third wave of floods between December 22 and 26, especially those living along the coastal areas. State Secretary Datuk Tengku Farok Hussin Tengku Abdul Jalil issued this reminder following the tropical storm Jelawat in the Philippines, which is also expected to affect the state.
Tengku Farok Hussin explained that if the storm’s impact is severe, the state will experience heavy rains and strong winds. He advised residents in the coastal areas from Besut to Kemaman to be prepared for the potential consequences of the storm.
These statements were made during a presentation of contributions for flood victims from Petronas to the Social Welfare Department on Wednesday (Dec 20).
Tengku Farok Hussin, who also leads the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNT) secretariat, emphasized that the state’s government is ready to handle another wave of floods. “We are always prepared for floods during the North-East Monsoon (MTL) season. Based on the forecast, (tropical storm Jelawat) will not only affect the East Coast but the whole of Malaysia,” he added.
The first wave of floods hit Terengganu from Nov 20 to Dec 1, followed by the second wave from Dec 14 until 19. During the second wave, almost 8,000 residents were evacuated to flood relief centres across eight districts, namely Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, Marang, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman, Dungun, Setiu and Besut. – Bernama
