Penang is preparing for potential water supply disruptions as a result of floods in Baling, Kedah. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has urged the public not to panic and to store as much water as possible while the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) monitors the situation. He stated, “Several areas in the state will face water disruption. We are still waiting for PBAPP’s update… Penangites, save as much water as possible.” Chow made this statement after attending the 2023 National Registration Day event at the Penang Chinese Town Hall on September 29th.

Chow explained that the disruption is the result of high levels of water turbidity caused by flooding in Baling on September 28th. According to PBAPP, the turbidity level of water from Sungai Muda at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant intake was still acceptable at 3am. However, the level significantly increased at 5am, and the plant became unable to treat the raw water from the river due to the risks associated with high turbidity. This situation is a recurrence of what previously occurred during flooding that affected Sungai Muda.

“PBAPP has announced that the treatment capacity at Sungai Dua LRA is down to 30% and supply disruption is expected in many areas of Penang,” Chow stated. In an early morning Facebook post, PBAPP notified the public that low water pressure can be anticipated in George Town, as well as North and Central Seberang Prai. South Bukit Dumbar to Balik Pulau, as well as South Seberang Prai, are also affected.
