VIENTIANE: As the 44th and 45th Asean Summits draw to a close, Malaysia has symbolically received the chairmanship of Asean from Laos.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the theme of inclusivity and sustainability was chosen by Malaysia as it reflects her aspirations for shared progress that ensures no one is left behind.

“It conveys our hope that the steps we take today will endure in the long run.

“It underscores our determination to keep the future firmly inside as we move forward,” said Anwar in his speech during the closing ceremony of the 44th and 45th Asean Summit and Related Summits in Vientiane on Friday (Oct 11).

Anwar also said decisions by Asean would be guided by the principle of consensus at all times.

“Together, we will reaffirm our commitment to building an open, inclusive and rules-based regional architecture,” added Anwar.

Anwar received the baton of the Asean chairmanship from Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone during the ceremony.

Anwar said as Asean strengthens internally, it will continue to explore and broaden economic partnerships beyond its borders.

“The convening of the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) + China Summit in 2025 will achieve exactly this.

“Above all, Asean will be unflinching in safeguarding Southeast Asia as a peaceful, stable and prosperous region,” said Anwar.

After Anwar’s speech, a video montage introducing Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean 2025 was played.

Malaysia’s Asean 2025 logo, which is based on a hibiscus flower in red, blue, and yellow, was also briefly shown during the video.
