KUALA LUMPUR: In a recent court ruling, the former Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) deputy CEO, Wafiy Abd Aziz, has been acquitted of a graft charge related to the supply of “Kurma For Ramadan Gift” four years ago. The verdict was delivered by Sessions Court judge Suzana Hussin, who stated that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against Wafiy Abd Aziz.
Judge Suzana Hussin issued an order of discharge and acquittal, stating, “Therefore, the court orders for the accused to be discharged and acquitted and the RM12,000 bail to be returned.”
Wafiy Abd Aziz was represented by lawyer Datuk Dr Baljit Singh Sidhu, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Diana Nor Azwa appeared for the prosecution.
The trial, which commenced in August 2021, saw 24 witnesses taking the stand to testify.
The charges against Wafiy Abd Aziz originated from an incident in July 2020, where he was accused of abusing his position as the EMGS deputy CEO. He allegedly approved an EMGS voucher worth RM12,175, dated June 3, 2019, for Mileeya Enterprise, a company owned by a relative of Wafiy Abd Aziz, in exchange for personal gratification.
The alleged offence took place at EMGS, Jalan Mayang Sari, Kuala Lumpur, on June 3, 2019.
If convicted, Wafiy Abd Aziz would have faced a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of no less than five times the amount of gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher, under Section 23 (1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 2009.
