BRAZIL has bestowed its highest honorific order upon former Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah for his contributions to and distinguished career in public health.
Ary Norton de Murat Quintella, Brazil’s Ambassador to Malaysia, presented the Order of Rio Branco to Dr Noor Hisham, commending him for leading the Health Ministry during the impactful Covid-19 pandemic, which resembled the Spanish Flu of 1918 in its global impact.
Quintella expressed that the pandemic emphasized both the admirable and flawed qualities of individuals, societies, and governments worldwide.
He praised the dedication and resilience of frontline health workers, including those in Malaysia, who selflessly protected others against an initially unknown and unpredictable disease.
The Ambassador also lauded the efforts of Malaysia’s Health Ministry in ensuring the safety of all individuals, including foreigners, within the country during the pandemic.
Furthermore, he regarded the Order of Rio Branco as recognition of the Malaysian government’s initiatives to provide access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable medicines and medical products for all.
During his acceptance speech, Dr Noor Hisham, who concluded his 35-year career with retirement in April, emphasized the importance of international collaboration in healthcare.
He expressed his gratitude and humility upon receiving this prestigious award from the Brazilian government, acknowledging its significance as a reminder of the critical role of collective preparedness and response against public health threats.
Notable foreign mission leaders and government officials attended the ceremony, held at the ambassador’s residence in Kuala Lumpur.
