MELAKA: A former assistant administrative officer of the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) was fined RM50,000 by the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh for cheating a teacher of over RM30,000.

Judge Elesabet Paya Wan meted out the punishment after Muhammad Anuar Mat Zin, 39, pleaded guilty to the charge on Thursday (July 27).

Based on the charge sheet, Muhammad Anuar had deceived a substitute teacher into believing that official receipts for repayment of fixed housing allowance emoluments, cost of living allowance and civil service allowance due to resignation amounted to RM30,749.88 were genuine.

The dishonest action had led the victim to hand over the said amount and the offence took place at the human resources division office at JAIM headquarters in Melaka Tengah district between Nov 3 and Nov 8, 2017.

The charge was framed under Section 417 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or a fine, or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Azriff Firdaus Mohamad Ali prosecuted while Muhammad Anuar was represented by lawyer Mohd Nazri Abd Hamid.
