Former Journalist and Kajai Award Winner Wanti Passes Away at Age 44
KUALA LUMPUR: Wan Noor Hayati Wan Alias, a former journalist and recipient of the prestigious Kajai Award, known by her friends and colleagues as Wanti, tragically passed away at the Serdang Hospital on Monday evening at around 6.10pm. She was only 44 years old at the time of her death.
Her brother, Wan Mohd Faizal Wan Alias, confirmed that Wanti succumbed to heart failure after battling pneumonia. He shared the heartbreaking news, revealing that she will be laid to rest at the Kampung Bintongan Muslim Cemetery in Rembau, Negri Sembilan, later in the evening at approximately 11pm.
Wanti had been admitted to the Putrajaya Hospital back in April after experiencing difficulty breathing. It was confirmed that she had contracted Covid-19. Unfortunately, her health started to deteriorate due to the long-term effects of the disease, which required her to seek treatment at both the Serdang and Kajang hospitals.
After spending the last two days at Serdang Hospital, Wanti sadly couldn’t overcome her health struggles. Throughout her career, she made significant contributions to the field of journalism, working not only with Utusan Malaysia but also with Berita Harian and Media Variasi. In 2013, she was honored with the Kajai Award, the highest recognition for journalists in Malaysia, presented by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI).
Wanti, who was a single mother, leaves behind a young son who is only nine years old. This news has shaken both the journalism community and those who knew her. Our thoughts and condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time. – Bernama
