Former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, has auctioned off a Rolex watch that was gifted to him by King Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia. The proceeds from the auction will be used to assist Palestine through monetary contributions. In a social media post, Zulkifli explained that he received the luxury watch from the Saudi King during a courtesy visit in Malaysia in 2017. He clarified that he did not open the gift box when he received it and kept it in his office until he became a minister. The watch was later moved to his personal office where he finally opened it and wore it as a token of appreciation.
Zulkifli stated that King Salman’s teachings of simplicity, unity of the ummah, and the dignification of religion will always be in his heart. However, he made the decision to auction off the Rolex with a starting price of RM40,000, with all the proceeds going towards the welfare of the Palestinian people. He expressed his hope that the auction would provide aid to those who are suffering in Palestine.
In a subsequent Facebook post, Zulkifli revealed that the highest bid for the watch stood at RM135,000. He expressed his gratitude to the bidders and conveyed his wishes for their pure intentions to be rewarded. He also announced that he would be meeting the winner on November 1 in the evening.
