A former director-general of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) has been charged with falsifying documents related to the quotation of several vehicles for collision tests. Datuk Dr Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, aged 47, pleaded not guilty to the four charges brought against him in the Sessions Court in Shah Alam on Monday (Oct 16). He is accused of falsifying quotation documents from multiple companies for the supply of 16 cars from Thailand, which were intended to be used in the MIROS Crash Test Laboratory in Bukit Katil, Ayer Keroh, Melaka.
The offence is said to have taken place on July 24, 2017, at a premises in Taman Kajang Sentral, Kajang. The charges brought against Khairil Anwar were made under Section 468 of the Penal Code, which carries penalties including imprisonment for up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.
Bail was set at RM50,000 for the accused, who was also required to provide one surety and surrender his passport to the court. Additionally, he must report to the Putrajaya office of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the first working day of every month. Khairil Anwar is not allowed to contact any witnesses in the case or access computers and documents at Miros.
The court hearing is scheduled for November 21. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamry, while the accused was represented by lawyer Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent. – Bernama
