The former Sarawak governor, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, has passed away. His daughter Datuk Hanifar Taib announced on Facebook that the 87-year-old passed away at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur at 4.28am on Wednesday (Feb 21).
His remains will be at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur before being brought back to Kuching.
Taib served as Sarawak chief minister from 1981 to 2014 and as governor from 2014 to 2022.
State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stated that a state funeral will be held for Taib at the New Sarawak Legislative Complex.
