KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming Gerakan party elections on July 15 promise an exciting four-cornered contest to determine the next party president for the 2023-2026 term.
Defending his post is Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, who will face three challengers – incumbent vice president Datuk Seri Michael Gan Peng Lam, former secretary-general Datuk Liang Teck Meng, and Federal Territories chairman Datuk Lau Hoi Keong.
The announcement of the candidates was made by vice president Soo Kay Ping, an officer in the national election committee, during a media conference held at Menara PGRM on Saturday (July 8).
Deputy president Oh Tong Keong will also be defending his post, clashing in a four-cornered fight with secretary-general Mak Kah Keong, V. Prabagaran, and education bureau head Dr Kiew Hen Chong.
For the three vice president positions, incumbents Datuk Baljit Singh and Koo Shiaw Lee will face challenges from Sabah Gerakan chairman Datuk Alexander Lo Su Hyen and Negri Sembilan Gerakan chairman Lee Ban Fatt.
Soo further shared that the race for the 18 central committee member positions has seen 40 nominations.
In the women’s wing, Chung Mon Sie and Wong Chia Zhen will vie for the positions of women’s chief and youth chief, respectively.
The Gerakan polls have been scheduled for July 15. – Bernama
