BATU PAHAT: Four men are feared drowned after their fishing boat capsized at Tanjung Segenting here.

Batu Pahat’s Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) maritime zone director, Maritime Commander Mohd Haniff Mohd Yunus, said the incident occurred around 6am on Friday (June 21).

“The fishing boat capsized 6.8 nautical miles (12.5km) southwest of Tanjung Segenting.

“There were five men, aged 43 to 62, on the boat, and they were out at sea to fish when bad weather and strong currents hit the vessel, causing it to overturn,” he said in a statement on Saturday (June 22).

A search and rescue was activated at 9am Friday, where the MMEA team found one of the five victims, 43-year-old Tan Siak Bin.

“The survivor was rescued by another fishing boat that was near the accident site. We have sent him to Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail here for medical treatment.

“The search for the remaining four victims resumes today (June 22) with the search radius expanded to cover a larger area,” added Mohd Haniff.

He urged those with information about the victims to contact the Batu Pahat maritime zone operations centre at 07-434 4020 or the emergency hotline MERS 999.
