Renowned Teochew Opera performer Ling Goh has been awarded the “Pendukung Seni” (NGO category) prize in a competition organized by the National Culture and Arts Department (JKKN), Penang. This win has brought significant recognition to classic Teochew puppetry and opera.

Goh, who won the top prize of RM1,000, stated in an interview with Buletin Mutiara that she represents the fourth generation of Teochew opera performers in the state. She received an invitation from the department to participate in the competition two months prior.

Her mother Toh Ai Hwa, the founder of the now-defunct Kim Giak Low Choon Puppet Troupe, had also previously submitted her own portfolio in the competition but was not selected. Regardless, Goh expressed her pride in her success and her hope that her mother and troupe members could also celebrate it.

“This is my first award from JKKN Penang since I took over the lead of Penang Teochew Puppet and Opera House in 2014. I am overwhelmed by the recognition and deeply appreciate the efforts of my troupe members, and I hope this success can ignite interest among the younger generation,” Goh said.

Goh revealed her intention to participate in a national competition to promote the art of Teochew puppet opera across the country. She emphasized the importance of promoting cultural shows and traditional arts like these on a larger scale.

Additionally, Goh mentioned her plan to transform Penang Teochew Puppet and Opera House into a learning association. Currently, she conducts three classes a week with over 50 students, ranging from seven to 74 years old. Goh hopes to cultivate their interest in this traditional art and make it more accessible for aspiring learners locally, eliminating the need to go abroad.
