KOTA KINABALU: A group of men witnessed a horrifying incident as their companion was attacked by a crocodile in Lahad Datu district, located on Sabah’s east coast, in the early hours of Wednesday (Sept 20).
While attempting to capture crabs off the coast of Kampung Tinagian, Tanjung Labian, the victim, a 23-year-old oil palm plantation worker, fell victim to the sudden assault by the reptile.
Lahad Datu Police Chief Asst Comm Dr Rohan Shah Ahmad stated, “The three friends could only watch helplessly as the attack unfolded within seconds.” He added, “The victim vanished immediately into the water before they could take any action.”
Finally, at 7:20 am, the man’s lifeless body was discovered face down on the beach near the army post at Kampung Tanjung Batu.
The victim, who was a foreigner, exhibited bite marks on his left arm and head, as well as scratches on his chest and backside, according to ACP Rohan.
Later, a police team transported the remains of the deceased to the forensics department of Lahad Datu Hospital for a postmortem examination.
“This incident marks the first crocodile attack recorded in Lahad Datu this year,” ACP Rohan stated. He urged the community, especially those engaging in water activities in the sea or rivers, to exercise additional caution against such attacks.
