Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, expressed satisfaction with his four-day visit to the United States, as it successfully showcased Malaysia’s stance on global issues and raised the country’s international profile. During the visit, Anwar had the opportunity to share Malaysia’s policies and aspirations regarding international relations, and engage in discussions on global issues and common interests.

Anwar disclosed during a press conference at the conclusion of his trip to New York for the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that he received numerous requests for meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA session. He noted that the overwhelming number of requests for bilateral meetings prevented him from accepting all of them due to time constraints. He expressed his pleasure at Malaysia’s elevated international standing.

Throughout his stay in New York, Anwar emphasized international concerns such as the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Islamophobia, climate change, and the issues faced by Myanmar. Additionally, he had the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of Turkiye, Iraq, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Iraq.

Anwar also utilized his visit to attract increased investment and trade to Malaysia, engaging with 15 leading Fortune 500 companies, including Airbnb, Amazon, Amazon Web Services, Boeing, ConocoPhillips, and Kimberly-Clark, during meetings at the Harvard Club. He also made an appearance at the Invest Malaysia New York event, targeted at equity and bond capital market investors managing assets worth US$40 trillion. Anwar reassured attendees of the government’s commitment to maintaining a favorable investment environment.

Despite initial hesitations due to various domestic issues, Anwar expressed satisfaction with his decision to attend the UNGA. He mentioned that there were multiple domestic matters demanding attention, such as energy transformation, the industrial master plan, civil economy, the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysian Plan, and ongoing by-elections. However, he expressed relief that the situation has considerably improved.
