KLANG: Many Indians were forced to find alternative ways to support themselves when the movement control order was implemented in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fortunately, social media platforms provided a means for these individuals to embark on entrepreneurial endeavors.

While some of these businesses have thrived and continue to generate profits, many are now in desperate need of financial assistance as sales opportunities extend beyond social media platforms after the MCO.

    K. Renuga, 33, who sells pickles obtained directly from the manufacturer, expressed her intentions to expand her business by applying for a loan under the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (Tekun) in the coming year.

During the tabling of the 2024 Budget, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that out of the RM330 million allocated to Tekun for small-scale entrepreneurs, RM30 million will benefit the Indian community.

“I have a registered enterprise and a consistent customer base. The loan will enable me to acquire additional inventory and explore avenues beyond social media for selling,” said the mother of three, who initiated her business during the MCO.

Renuga noted that she is aware of many women who lack collateral to apply for bank loans but require funding to start small businesses.

“Unfortunately, most of them are unfamiliar with Tekun,” she added.

    S. Kalai, who recently lost her clerical job, expressed her intent to seek a Tekun loan in order to establish a food stall.

“There used to be intense competition, and securing a Tekun loan was not easy. However, with RM30 million specifically allocated for Indians, I believe my chances are quite favorable,” said the 55-year-old. Kalai also pointed out that starting her own business is her only option, as her age limits her chances of securing traditional employment.

“The 2024 Budget has inspired me, and hopefully, by this time next year, I will own a profitable food business,” she shared.

Charles Manickam, President of the Entrepreneurs Association of Little India Klang, highlighted the case of an Indian woman who walks from shop to shop daily, selling various products from her sling bag.

With the availability of a Tekun loan and assistance in establishing a business, Charles stated that the woman could operate from a fixed location instead of having to roam around all day.

He emphasized that the loan would aid individuals like her in renting small stalls and purchasing additional inventory.

Meanwhile, Datuk Ramanan Ramakrishnan, Chairman of the special vehicle committee for the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (Mitra), praised the budget.

Ramanan noted that Anwar’s Madani Budget also set aside RM100 million for Mitra’s socio-economic development programs for the Indian community.

According to Ramanan, there are various economic development opportunities for Indians across different ministries.

“I pledge to ensure that the Mitra funds are utilized effectively and with integrity through strategic initiatives prioritizing the B40 and M40 communities,” Ramanan stated.
