The local furniture industry will be the focus of a special meeting in October, according to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. The roundtable, to be chaired by Tengku Zafrul, aims to support and enhance the Malaysian furniture industry. He revealed that during a meeting in Muar with members of the Muar and Malaysia furniture associations, several issues were brought up. As a result, Tengku Zafrul agreed to collaborate with the Johor government to address these concerns in the upcoming roundtable meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
One of the issues raised by industry players was the shortage of skilled workers. Additionally, they expressed hope that the state and federal governments could provide assistance in exploring new international markets. The industry players also mentioned the Muar Furniture Hub, and advocated for discussions with Johor Corporation (JCorp), the relevant party responsible for overseeing it. Tengku Zafrul confirmed that a meeting with JCorp would also be scheduled.
Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi expressed his optimism that the meeting would contribute to the growth of the furniture industry, particularly in Muar. He expressed gratitude to the minister for prioritizing the furniture industry, which is vital for Muar. Notably, around 70% of the furniture industry’s total trade comes from Muar, making up approximately 2.7% of the global furniture trade. The Mentri Besar expressed confidence that through collaboration with the Federal Government, these numbers could increase further, as it would help to resolve numerous outstanding issues.
