The proposed Malaysian Media Council Bill is expected to be brought to Parliament in March next year, but further engagement with the media will be conducted beforehand, according to Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil. He emphasized the importance of involving the media fraternity in discussions about the council before its tabling. Fahmi Fadzil questioned why bills are only discussed once they have already been tabled and stated that he requested discussions with media representatives first.
Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Datuk Muguntan Vanar expressed full support for the efforts of the unity government in establishing the media council. The creation of an independent media council is expected to enhance the Malaysian media’s self-regulation and ability to report accurately, responsibly, ethically, and fairly. Muguntan highlighted the importance of a strong working relationship between the media and government, as the government relies on the mass media to communicate with the people and ensure access to accurate information. This, in turn, allows the public to discern fake news and misinformation on social media.
Muguntan further emphasized that accurate information from the media will help the government gain the trust of the people regarding its policies and development direction. The unity government believes that the establishment of a media council will strengthen the Malaysian media landscape and promote transparency and accountability.
