The president of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, remains undeterred by Sabah Bersatu’s desire to regain control of the state government after losing it due to defections last year. He stated that his party already boasts 300,000 members statewide, demonstrating its popularity.
Hajiji stated, “That is their (Sabah Bersatu’s) big ambition, let them be. We are not threatened. If you look at membership numbers, Gagasan Rakyat is favorably received in Sabah. We managed to get 300,000 members in a few months since the party’s formation,” during the party supreme council meeting on Friday (Sept 8) in Kota Kinabalu.
Hajiji was asked to provide his thoughts on Abdul Kadir Damsal, the secretary of Sabah Bersatu, who claimed earlier this week that their party is making a comeback with new leaders and committees established at the division level as they prepare to win back the seats lost due to defections. Abdul Kadir emphasized that Sabah Bersatu’s grassroots support remains intact, and the party has reorganized at the branch and division levels to strengthen its position.
Sabah Bersatu played a crucial role in forming the Sabah government after the 2020 state elections. However, after the 15th General Election, all its assemblymen, including Hajiji, left to establish Gagasan Rakyat.
In another development, Hajiji disclosed that the supreme council has decided to commence meetings for the party’s 73 divisions in Sabah from Sept 23 to Oct 15. The party’s first general assembly will take place on Nov 13 and 14 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
Hajiji stated, “We have also made the decision to establish a party division in Labuan island.” He further announced the appointment of Rosli Awang Damit as the division chief and the formation of a committee.
